TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is preparing a policy to brace for drought, which can threaten the availability of staple food. New granaries are being prepared in Central Kalimantan to ensure sufficient supplies.
"The President's instruction was to concentrate on setting up new granaries on areas that have been prepared, which is Kalimantan," Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said in a teleconference after a closed meeting on Tuesday, May 5.
According to Airlangga, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry reported that the areas in Kalimantan have enough rainfall until November with a discharge of around 200 mm.
The minister also said that there is a relatively sufficient water supply. The ministries and relevant state institutions are preparing the infrastructure for food barns in Central Kalimantan, he added.
The granaries will be built on a land of 200,000 hectares.
