Street Crimes on the Rise amid Drop in National Crime Rates

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indonesian Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) has noted an overall decrease in national crime rates from March until April 2020.
In spite of the overall national decrease, Chief of Public Information at the Public Relations Division of the Indonesian Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri), Senior Commissioner Asep Adi Saputra, has pointed out an increase in street crimes during the same period.
The street crimes referred to by Senior Commissioner Asep includes public criminal acts such as mugging, robbery, vehicle theft, and raids on a number of minimarkets.
“But overall, the situation is still safe and under control,” emphasized Asep, on Tuesday, May 5, 2020.
Nationally, Senior Commissioner Asep revealed a 19.9 percent decrease in crime rates. Initially, 19,128 criminal offenses were recorded in March. On the other hand, “(the criminal offense) in April dropped to 15,322 cases. We continue to make preemptive and preventive efforts” he added.
