TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The large-scale social restriction (PSBB) imposed on a number of major cities in Indonesia has moved the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to initiate an online event dubbed the “ngamen dari rumah” or ‘busking from home’ meant to accommodate street buskers or performers who are also affected by the COVID-19 safety protocol.
The ministry has partnered with the street music institute (IMJ) upon facilitating 200 street musicians to perform on a government-supported musical stage.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact in nearly every profession in the creative industry. One of the creative sub-sectors affected include the art workers who have lost their means to support their lives,” said Josua Simanjuntak, the ministry’s deputy of the digital economy and creative products in a statement on Monday.
This platform is also meant to be a stage for performers who are disabled, elderly, up to migrant performers. The ministry is eyeing to help them remain productive and help their source of income during the COVID-19 pandemic and especially amid the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The acting director of the creative music industry, art performances, and publishing, Mohammad Amin said that the video compilation of 200 street musicians will be streamed on social media accounts managed by the ministry across Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube.
The curated street buskers will be aired live online on Instagram from May 14- May 22 and May 28 - May 30 from 15:30 - 17:20 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The event will also show online music classes that are usually taught at the street music institute (IMJ).
