TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said that the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic will ultimately force Muslims, in Indonesia in particular, to carry out fasting in the holy month of Ramadan under a situation that most have never undergone before.
The president’s speech was uploaded on his Youtube account on late Thursday, April 23, upon welcoming the first day of Ramadan.
“We will experience a new atmosphere and permeate the true meaning of the fasting that we practice. A fasting that is personal and without witnesses” Widodo said on Thursday.
He also encouraged people to use the momentum to buildup personal strength along with taking care of those we love surrounding us. Jokowi deems this year’s Ramadan as a moment for people to establish self-discipline.
“Let us all welcome the blessed the holy Ramadan to break the chain of [COVID-19] transmission, for our own sake, our brothers and sisters, and the nation as a whole,” he remarked.
