PON Papua Postponed, Govt: Venue Constructions Keep Going

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali ensured that preparations for the implementation of the 2020 National Sports Week or PON in Papua will keep going albeit President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo postponed the event to October 2021.
He said the preparations include the construction of venues and the procurement of the equipment while adjusting it to the current condition of the province that is also affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
“For example, for the procurement of imported goods, if the importers are not available, we have to wait for them,” said Zainudin through an online press conference on Thursday, April 23.
The Gorontalo-born minister further assured that the construction of athletes' dorms will continue as well.
Earlier reported, President Jokowi decided to postpone the 2020 PON in Papua to October 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. The National Games event, held once every four years, will be postponed to October 2021.
