TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A video shared by Twitter user @Gunawan_bagol on Wednesday, set at North Jakarta’s Mangga Dua Square, is claimed to be footage of a failed looting attempt on one of the city’s popular shopping centers.
The user accompanied the video with a caption that read; “Mangga Dua Square almost got looted, thankfully there were security personnel and local residents to block the attempt,” wrote @Gunawan_bagol.
However, Tempo confirmed this to the North Jakarta Police’s criminal investigation unit chief Commissioner Wirdhanto Hadicaksono to which he confirmed that the narrative shared online about the incident was untrue.
“[The looting narrative] is a hoax. The incident was due to a conflict between one of the security personnel and another person,” said the Police chief to Tempo on Wednesday.
Furthermore, the police chief said that the developing chaos recorded in the footage was a conflict sparked by the wives of individuals causing social media commotion. He also assures that Mangga Dua Square is currently safe and sound.
