TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I Deputy Speaker, Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, on Monday conveyed his appreciation for the safety protocol on news reporting produced by the Press Council and a number of organizations amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“This step would make journalists prioritize personal health and safety rather than the news itself,” said Abdul Kharis.
In Monday’s DPR hearing with Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) and the Press Council, it concluded that the safety of journalists in conducting their job is essential to guarantee the continuance and existence of the press industry.
The DPR legislator from the PKS faction also agreed with the Press Council’s call to prioritize the journalistic ethical code in reporting issues related to COVID-19, mainly in reporting the personal identities of victims of the pandemic that must be protected and not published.
“They are also encouraged to be more selective in determining news sources that are competent and do not cause public dispute,” said the legislator.
