4.3M Earthquake Rocks Pangandaran, BMKG Reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake measuring 4.3 magnitudes on the Richter scale jolted Pangandaran Regency, West Java Province, this afternoon on April 9 at 14:20 local time, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.
The quake was generated at a depth of 23 kilometers beneath the sea, yet it had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
The Head of BMKG Bandung office Tony Agus Wijaya said via a written statement that the quake’s epicenter was recorded at 8.14 degrees south latitude and 107.89 east longitude. “It is located in the sea, 82 kilometers southwest of Pangandaran,” said Tony on Thursday, April 9.
BMKG classified it as a shallow one. “It is activated by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plates,” Tony added.
Based on the agency’s analysis and the public reports, the tremor was felt in Ciamis, Pangandaran, and Tasikmalaya with a I-II intensity level of the MMI Scale.
According to Tony, there is no report yet regarding the fatalities caused by the quake and no aftershocks recorded as of 14:45. People are advised to stay calm and not be influenced by baseless information.
