Jokowi: Govt Will Not Release Corruption Convicts

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi firmly stated that the government has no plan to give remissions to corruption convict to minimize the spread of Coronavirus in prisons.
"We have never included corruption inmates in our discussions during meetings. There is no revision of PP 99 regarding this matter. The parole is only for general [crimes] prisoners," Jokowi said during a teleconference meeting from the Bogor Presidential Palace Monday, April 6.
Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly had said that his department was preparing a revision to Government Regulation No.99/2012 as an effort to minimize the spread of the Coronavirus in prisons. He said corruption inmates could be released on condition that they are 60 years old or above, and had served two-thirds of their jail terms. "There are 300 people," Laoly said.
Later, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD clarified Laoly's statement. Mahfud asserted that the government had no plans to revise PP No.99/2012, which governs the Terms and Procedures for the Implementation of Prisoners Rights—particularly prisoners of corruption.
"Just so we are clear, until today the government has made no plans to change or revise PP 99/2012. We have no plans to provide remission or parole to prisoners," Mahfud said in his official statement on Saturday, April 4.
