Govt Clarifies BPTJ's Recommendation to Stop Public Transport

2 April 2020 06:06 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spokesperson for the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments, Jodi Mahardi, clarified the meaning of the recent recommendation by the Greater Jakarta Transportation Agency (BPTJ) to stop the operations of all public transports in the greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek).

"Looking closely, the substance of the circular letter issued by the head of BPTJ is mainly a recommendation to restrict [the operations of public transportation]. So there will be no operational stoppage," said the spokesperson in a written statement on Wednesday.

He said the ministry felt compelled to clarify the issue as there are many news reports suggesting that the government has officially imposed such policy.

Jodi elaborates that the BPTJ circular is mainly acts as a recommendation to regional administrations that are permitted to enact the president's call for a large-scale social restriction to curb the spread of coronavirus.

However, regions are not permitted to implement the social restriction, nor stop the operation of public transports, without the tequired approval from the Health Ministry.

Even After obtaining an approval, BPTJ's recommendation still only acts as an official guideline for regional policies related to the coronavirus outbreak.
