Surabaya Mobilizes Disinfectant Drones in COVID-19-stricken Areas

27 March 2020 11:36 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Surabaya City government on Thursday, March 26, has mobilized a drone to help sterilize four areas in the sub-district of Gunung Anyar. The unmanned drone was intentionally used as it is considered the safest option to handle the target areas already considered to be positive  for COVID-19.

”We continue to spray disinfectants but minimize the involvement of a human operator, which is why we used the unmanned aerial drone,” said Irvan Widyanto, the local public order agency (Satpol PP).

The areas targeted by the disinfectant drone include protocol areas, private housing , and rural areas. ”We hope 700 liters of it (the disinfectant) will be enough to cover the Gunung Anyar area, especially rural areas and housing complex there,” said Widyanto.

He argues that the use of a drone provides the safest option for the COVID-19 task force as it coincides with the instructions of Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini upon suppressing the mobilization of human operators in sterilization procedures.

”The Mayor always reminds us that helping others should not overlook personal safety,” said the Satpol PP head who also assures that other districts in Surabaya are also in the government’s coronavirus sterilization program.
