TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said that the cancellation of the Formula E race initially scheduled to be held in June is mainly to avoid taking bigger risks amid the COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak, as the global-scale event would attract a large crowd of international tourists.
“Especially considering that the Formula E race is an event that will be attended by international tourists. The risks that could happen are too big for Jakarta,” Anies Baswedan announced at City Hall on Wednesday.
Up until Tuesday, Indonesia has recorded 27 positive cases of COVID-19 coronavirus infection.
Moreover, the governor said the city’s administration will tighten security and closely monitor the spread of the coronavirus, one of which is by reducing the number of public gatherings and mass public interactions.
Previously reported, the city’s Capital Investment and One-Stop Service (PM-PTSP) announced it will study a policy that would postpone public events with mass-gatherings from March to April following the climbing number of COVID-19 or coronavirus cases to 27.
“For the moment it is from March to April,” said the PM-PTSP Chairperson Benni Aguscandra on Tuesday, March 10. However, he noted that the postponing could possibly be extended depending on the situation.
“Yes, if the situation gets worse it will likely be extended. But we hope for the best. We will determine future mitigations,” said Benni.
