Mount Merapi Erupts; Spewing 6,000 meter Ash Column

3 March 2020 08:40 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Mount Merapi reportedly erupted again on Tuesday, March 3 at 05:22 a.m. local time, spewing a column of hot clouds up to 6,000 meters above the summit.

As recorded in the seismogram, the eruption had an amplitude of 75 mm and lasted for 450 seconds. The avalanches of hot clouds headed towards Kali Gendol.

“The eruption column reaches 6,000 meters in height. The hot cloud avalanches flow to Kali Gendol up to a maximum 2 kilometers distance,” said Lasiman Pecut, the Mount Merapi Observation Post officer, on Tuesday, March 3.

At current, the status of the volcano, located on the border of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, is still at Level II (Alert) since May 21, 2018.

“The community keeps vigilance. We also warn tourists to stay careful,” said Bambang, the tourism activist on the mountain slope.

Mount Merapi is still being closed for hiking activities except for mitigation purposes by the authorities.
