TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There is an assumption that tapioca ball, commonly known as bubble or boba, is more dangerous than sweetened drinks, while in fact, both of them have the same negative effect on the body.

A nutritionist Pafitri says either boba or the sweet drink contributes very high calories to the body which has no nutritional value needed by the human body.

"Boba contains quite a high calorie since it is a carbohydrate and then it is combined with sugar to make it, so that the calories become even higher," she said.

Meanwhile, sugary drinks that are commonly consumed with tapioca balls, contain sugar, milk, creamer, or thick sweetener. Such combination equals to 8-18 teaspoons of sugar.

"Then the drink itself, besides boba, also contains sugar, milk, sometimes biscuits, which makes it even more dangerous; the sugar is high and then the total calories are also high," Pafitri explained.

In every 500 milliliters of bubble drinks contain 500-800 calories or equal to about 2-5 plates of 100 grams of white rice. If consumed regularly, it can cause diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

"It is better to avoid [consuming such beverage] or at least twice a month at the maximum. It is very dangerous because the accumulation will cause obesity and other diseases will follow," said Pafitri.
