TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Mass Rapid Transit atau MRT Jakarta will form two joint-venture subsidiaries. One would be engaged in transit oriented development (TOD) businesses, and the other for ticket integration.
MRT Jakarta president director William Sabandar said that TOD planning and ticket integration are works that the parent company cannot do alone, thus subsidiaries are needed to run the business.
"Doing it ourselves would not be effective," William said during a journalists' forum at MRT's office here on February 27.
The subsidiary that will run ticket integration businesses, William said, will collaborate with Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro), a regionally-owned enterprise. That way, there will be three ticket operators available for passengers: MRT, Jakpro, and Transjakarta.
MRT Jakarta had also established partnership with PT Transportasi Jakarta or Transjakarta in terms of ticket integration—making it possible for passengers to use the same card to pay for Transjakarta bus and MRT fares.
Meanwhile, the TOD business will be in charge of integrating the areas of five existing MRT stations. According to William, the TOD concept also applies for in the second phase of MRT construction for the Hotel Indonesia-Ancol route.
"To do this, we need a subsidiary that specifically deals with TOD—separate fro the main business," William said.
The TOD subsidiary will have two main jobs: building public facilities such as pedestrian walks, roads, green spaces; and ensuring that the TOD sales valus continues to rise. The latter work would require the TOD subsidiary to deal with building and business owners near MRT stations in a bid to maintain the area's commercial value.
