TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dr. Kariadi General Hospital or RSUP Dr. Kariadi in Semarang confirmed a suspected patient of coronavirus or Covid-19 died in the isolation room or ICU on Sunday, February 23, 2020, after undergoing observation since he was brought to the hospital on February 19, 2020. The hospital asserted that the cause of death of the patient was not the virus, but bronchopneumonia.
A member of the medical team handling the patient Fathur Nurkholis explained that the 37-year-old man suffered from the severe inflammation of the lung and respiratory tract. "He dies of lung damages, not coronavirus," Fathur explained on Wednesday, February 26, 2020.
According to him, bronchopneumonia that is a type of pneumonia is caused by a virus, bacteria, or fungal chest infections. This illness can spread to other organs quickly, and the incubation period is five to seven days, he added.
"He suffers from multi-organ system failure, even though the initial cause is a respiratory problem," Fathur said, adding that the probable cause was bacteria.
The hospital's medical and nursing director Agoes Oerip Poerwoko, said that his hospital had treated 10 patients suspected of carrying the coronavirus as they had a travel history to countries exposed to the virus, which was first reported in the Wuhan City of China, and presented symptoms of the disease such as flu and fever.
At present, Dr. Kariadi Hospital is treating one patient in the isolation room. "[We are] waiting for the examination result," Agoes said. The examination was carried out in the laboratory test at the Ministry of Health's Research and Development Center in Jakarta.
