TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim has responded to the recent sexual harassment cases happening on campuses by asking the public to give him more time as he was still looking for a solution to overcome this pressing issue.
“Affirmation and enforcement really need to be emphasized. But please give us time to find a solution. This problem has become an extremely severe plague,” said Nadiem in Jakarta today.
The minister previously said intolerance, sexual violence, and bullying as the three sins in the education sector which are completely unacceptable. “A red card for the three vile acts.”
He also asserted that the problems were being discussed by related state ministries and agencies. Nadiem said this joint effort would bring about a solution to overcome sexual harassment by involving members of the public.
“Character reinforcement, warnings, and training are not enough. There need to be firm actions that can be executed in every level of those three sins,” said Nadiem Makarim.
The most recent cases of reported sexual harassment cases came from Padang State University, IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo, and Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. As for the sexual harassment case in the Padang State University, a lecturer allegedly sexually violated a female student and has been named suspect by local authorities.
