  • TEMPO.CO, JakartaCoordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md said that law enforcement must not be influenced by political considerations.

“For example, when a Papuan involves in a crime, it is prohibited if we don’t enforce the law just because there is an issue of Papua Merdeka (Papua Free Movement). The law is the law. What’s important is public transparency,” said Mahfud in State Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, February 19.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo held today a closed meeting with Mahfud, who is also the head of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), in State Palace, Jakarta.

During the half-an-hour meeting, Mahfud said he proposed several inputs on policies to elevate the performance of the National Police (Polri).

Among the recommendations was the law enforcement that is free from political considerations and the approach to restorative justice that is being promoted. “We should not frequently use  KUHP (the Criminal Code) and KUHAP (the Criminal Law Procedures Code). [For example,] a person who just steals a watermelon faces a criminal charge,” he remarked.

Mahfud Md pinned hope the restorative justice system could produce security, order, and protection among the community. “[I also suggest] criminal cases to be handled by the city resort or regency police so that the sector police will not interfere too much.”
