TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A survey by the Indonesia Political Opinion (IPO) found 31.1 percent of respondents admire the State-owned Enterprise Minister Erick Thohir in a survey on the most favorable state-ministers’ performance within the first 100 days of President Jokowi and VP Ma’ruf Amin leadership.
The survey also found that most university students and millennials favor Erick Thohir’s breakthroughs applied at the State-owned Enterprise Ministry.
Following Erick and placing second is Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi who garnered 25 percent, while Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono ranked third in the IPO survey.
A postgraduate student from the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of economy, Oktaviany, argues that Erick managed to drop the ministry’s bureaucratic culture and apply a profit-oriented strategy from the private industry.
The same postgraduate student yearned for Erick’s style to trickle down to other SOEs Ministry employees. “As a millennial worker that partners with SOEs in the lower level, I still experience negative things that have been deep etched as a culture in the lower levels,” said Oktaviany on Monday, February 10.
Asked separately, academic from the Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University (UIN), Endi Aulia Garadian, said Erick Thohir’s decision leaving the private business sector to serve the public is highly commendable.
“I like how he works and treats companies as companies, even if it’s a state-owned one. Anything hampering SOEs performance must be fixed,” said Endi.
