TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The State Intelligence Agency (BIN) has conducted early detection and mapped out potential vulnerabilities and threats for the National Sports Week or PON 2020, which will be held in Papua. BIN chief Budi Gunawan said he carried out a joint-operation for eliminating said potentials—preventing them from becoming actual disturbances and ensuring everyone's safety.
These precautions are taken because the national sports event will be attended by heads of state as well as ambassadors, "in addition to athletes and officials," Budi Gunawan said in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 4.
PON 2020 will take place in four major areas in Papua: Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Mimika Regency, and Merauke Regency. The sports week is scheduled to take place from October 20 to November 2.
BIN, said Budi Gunawan, is collaborating with the TNI and Polri to roll out intelligence operations, security restorations, and maintaining stability. The involvement of intelligence, he remarked, is to guarantee the safety of country leaders, especially those from neighboring Asia Pacific nations.
In January, Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali stated that the Papua Provincial government has ensured the readiness for hosting PON 2020, both in terms of infrastructure and security.
