West Java's Cibeet and Cijurey Dams Set to Reduce Flood Risk

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry has set 2021 as an official deadline to kickstart two of West Java’s dams, Cibeet and Cijurey, bearing important roles in tackling floods.
“We will construct the Cibeet and Cijurey Dams scheduled to start next year,” said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono in an official statement on Thursday, January 30.
Following up on the upstream flood management infrastructure, the PUPR Minister suggested that he will focus the ministry’s efforts in the downstream areas such as Karawang, Muara Gembong, and Cilamaya, which have been struck by flood issues this year.
Other projects being constructed in Bandung that the Ministry commenced specifically for Bandung Basin’s flood management program include the establishment of the Gedebage reservoir, the Cieunteung Retention Pool, and the Cisangkuy floodway.
The Gedebage reservoir that cost over Rp85 billion was constructed from 2017 to 2018 over 7.7 hectares of land. The reservoir’s maximum volume capacity is 270,000 m3. Meanwhile, the 190,000 m2 Cieunteung Retention Pool is designed to reduce floods in an area of 39 hectares.
