TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, was reluctant to respond to the removal of Ronny Sompie as Immigration Director-General by Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly on Tuesday, January 28, 2020.
“Ask the Minister of Law and Human Rights," the president said curtly, in Cimahi, West Java, on Wednesday, January 29, 2020.
The removal of Ronny reportedly to have resulted from the case of Harun Masiku, a suspect in the bribery of General Elections Commissions (KPU) Commissioner, Wahyu Setiawan.
Yasonna previously claimed that the dismissal of Ronny F Sompie has been done in order to avoid any conflicting interests when the independent fact-finding team Yasonna had formed will begin their investigation. The team will inspect the return of Harun Masiku to Indonesia on January 7, 2020; a fact the Immigration Office was previously oblivious to.
The formation of this team was based on irregularities in the information provided by the Immigration Office. "There is something strange, so there must be a team," the minister said last Tuesday, January 28, 2020.
He admitted that there had been a change in the online Immigration Management Information System (SIMKIM) and that disrupted an airport system.
Minister Yasonna Laoly has appointed the ministry's Inspector General Jhoni Ginting as Acting Director-General of Immigration.
