TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) will implement a three-semester internship program for university students. Task executor for the Director-General of Higher Education at the ministry, Nizam, said that his institution is also encouraging companies to provide wages to the interns.
“We also encourage (them) to grant the students their rights when they are interning at those institutions and companies,'' answered Nizam when asked about the Ministry of Labour Regulation Number 36/2016, in the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, January 28, 2020.
The regulation stipulates that intern students are entitled to receive an allowance which consists of transportation, food, and incentives, although the government does not specify the specific amount.
Nizam said that students and institutions or companies would mutually benefit from the internship program. The company is benefitted from receiving educated human resources, while the interning students will enjoy the prospect of being directly recruited by the company if they are deemed as having performed greatly.
However, Nizam did not give any confirmation on whether or not the education ministry will publish a specific regulation on the matter. He instead pointed to the fact that the government is already communicating and coordinating with companies.
The Kemendikbud would opt to encourage the agreement being done organically, between institutions, as according to Nizam, it would ensure that the cooperation between the parties would last longer.
