TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Menteng Sectoral Police, Central Jakarta launched raids on street thugs, or preman, often roaming around in Taman Ismail Marzuki art and cultural center and HI Roundabout on Monday night, January 20.
During the raid, a total of 13 people considered to disturb public order were secured, and six of them were tested positive for illegal drugs.
“Six people use narcotics, such as crystal meth, cannabis, psychotropic drugs, and sedative drugs. This is alarming because a crime may originate from drug abuse,” said Menteng Police head of criminal investigation unit Comr. Gozali Luhuloma on Monday.
Although they were tested positive, Gozali said the police did not found the illicit goods on them. Thus, they would undergo rehabilitation, while the other clean thugs were sent home after submitting an agreement letter.
Gozali mentioned that the street thugs under the guise of illegal parking attendants often collected high parking fees in the area ranging from Rp20,000 to Rp25,000 per car. “The money was used for purchasing narcotics,” he added.
Following the raid, Gozali appealed to the public to not fret to report any acts of thugs to the nearest police station.
