TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 35-second clip went viral on social media of Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan attending a Quran reciting session sitting among a number of ulemas and other attendees. This short video also shows Anies drinking water from a glass that was previously used by an ulema sitting beside him.
Responding to the video’s existence, the head of the the Jakarta foreign affairs partnership bureau, Muhammad Mawardi, clarified that the governor was not scheduled to attend any foreign meetings abroad.
“There are no foreign visits scheduled. The photo that mentions Pak Governor is currently in Saudi Arabia is simply not true,” said Mawardi as Tempo reached him for clarifications on Monday, January 20.
The video in question was accompanied by a caption that reads; "Gubernur DKI Anies Baswedan berkumpul bersama para ulama dan Habaib di Tanah Suci Makkah Allahu Akbar !!" which translates to “Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan gathers with ulemas and habaib in Mecca, Allahu Akbar.”
Furthermore, Mawardi said he was baffled by the spread of the fake videos on social media, especially those related to Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan. “There is a plethora of false information spreading on social media that must be clarified.”
