TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, denied allegations that he is trying to establish a political dynasty following his son's Gibran Rakabuming Raka and son-in-law's Bobby Nasution potential candidacy in the 2020 regional elections.
Jokowi said that the people would not necessarily choose either of both. "Whoever, if they are not desired by the people, will not be [in the regional elections]. It's still difficult [for them] to find a political party," Jokowi said during a dialogue with reporters at the Merdeka Palace, in Jakarta, on Friday, January 17, 2020.
Jokowi also said he would not help Gibran and Bobby in the 2020 regional elections.
Gibran is planning to run in the regional election to be Mayor of Solo, Central Java, while Bobby wants to run in the regional election to be Mayor of Medan, North Sumatra.
If both of them succeed in advancing to the 2020 elections, Jokowi said he would not join on their campaign. "I won't campaign. I have a lot of work," Jokowi said.
Jokowi affirms his believe in the Indonesian people, saying that Indonesians are becoming more and more aware of politics. The people, he said, can decide for themselves which candidate will be voted for or not. "It's different with the ministerial positions. This is a contest, a competition, [they] can win or lose," Jokowi said.
