TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spokesman for the 212 Alumni Brotherhood, Novel Bamukmin, said that President Joko Widodo or Jokowi, has greater responsibility in tackling floods in Jakarta. Thus, the problem of flooding in the capital city cannot only be borne by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan.
"Jokowi promised that the flood mitigation would become much easier if he becomes the president," said Novel in Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, January 14, 2020.
He said that Jokowi had already been the Jakarta Governor for two years and five years as a president. Therefore, he should've had seven years of experience to help dealing with flooding in the capital city.
"While Anies has been a governor for just two years, who is more responsible for the flood now? The most responsible one is supposedly the highest leader of this country," he said. "They should be aware of that."
Novel and the supporters of Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan filled the areas of Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, yesterday. They came to escort and guard the mass who asked Anies to step down due to his inability in handling the flood in capital city.
The mass who were against Anies initially had a protest in front of City Hall. However, their arrival got a reaction from supporters of Anies who were inside the Jakarta City Hall.
Hundreds of Anies supporters had left the Jakarta City Hall area, but the police asked them to go back inside to avoid clashes with the counter-mass.
Novel, who is also the Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Muslim Youth Movement, said that the mass supporters of Anies was indeed being urged to not to leave the Jakarta City Hall area so they would not meet with the other group who were against Anies Baswedan.
