TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tourist from the United States, Ryan Matthew, is reportedly arrested by Denpasar Police after committing a hit-and-run on two locals in the area of Uluwatu, South Kuta, while driving under the influence of alcohol.
"Police received information of a car driven recklessly by a foreign national which eventually crashed. Due to his demeanor, two motorcyclists and three other people were injured. The victims have been taken to the hospital," said Denpasar Police Chief Grand Commissioner Ruddi Setiawan on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at the police headquarters in Denpasar.
The victims of Ryan's reckless driving were taken to the Jimbaran Hospital with bruises and have been sent home by doctors. Meanwhile, Ryan Matthew himself sustained injuries to his head and body and was treated at the Surya Usada Hospital in Nusa Dua.
Police say that it is not clear whether the tourist sustained his injuries due to the accident or because of a crowd-beating he allegedly received.
"It's still under investigation," said the police chief.
Moreover, the police chief said Ryan has stayed in Indonesia for more than 11-years together with his wife, an Indonesian from Bondowoso, East Java. However, his wife was at her hometown when the accident happened.
"The tourist is currently at the police HQ (Mako resta) and is being questioned. The investigation is set to be continued at the Bhayangkara Hospital considering the tourist is currently still under the influence of alcohol," said the Denpasar Police Chief on Thursday, January 9, 2020.
