TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Culture and Education (Kemendikbud), Nadiem Makarim, said that Indonesia’s charm as an international film production site could be on the rise along with the quality of talented filmmakers in the industry.
“Kemendikbud hopes Indonesia to become the world’s favorite filming location,” said Nadiem during the officiation of the ministry's cooperation with Netflix.
He, therefore, said that a blend of local filmmakers, wanting to develop their abilities, with the world’s best filmmakers is important.
In line with Nadiem, Director of ‘Si Buta dari Gua Hantu’, Timo Tjahjanto said the cooperation can greatly improve the quality of Indonesian films. Timo cited what happened in the Mexican film industry as an example.
“Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro Gómez; they all learned in America, but after their success in America, they opted to go back to Mexico, to make films there,” he said.
Timo mentioned how New Zealander director Peter Jackson has managed to transform his hometown into a popular Hollywood filming location. “The vision that Minister Nadiem has is very good, and small buds can sprout from this Netflix cooperation,” he said.
