TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, held a meeting with regional heads who were affected by the recent flooding at Merdeka, Palace Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, January 8, 2020.
On that occasion, Widodo has demanded Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan, to carry on previous projects that had been started, especially ones related to the rivers.
“I have asked for the completion of the Ciliwung artificial canal towards East Flood Canal (BKT), within this year,” said the president as he opened the meeting.
Jokowi urged Anies to follow through with the issue of land clearing in order to continue the project. Furthermore, in an effort to prevent flooding, the president demanded Anies to continue the river normalization program.
“As well as the continuation of projects; be it normalization or naturalization, that has been started in the rivers of Jakarta,” he said.
Joko Widodo has stated that Ciliwung is not the only river needing to be normalized. More rivers that need normalization would include Pesanggrahan River, Cipinang River, Buaran River, and Moorkervart River, amongst 14 others.
“I believe all (rivers) are in need to be normalized so that the river flow in Jakarta can revert back to normal,” the president remarked.
