TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) claimed it had no worries if many insurance participants chose to lower their class category after the government increased the premium fee for members of the non-wage recipients scheme (PBPU).
“If participants stay in class I but do not pay the premium regularly, it will be useless. They are better to be in class III and make a routine payment,” said the agency spokesman Muhammad Iqbal Anas Ma’ruf at Hong Kong Cafe on Tuesday, January 7. He opined that such a condition would also encourage better hospital services for the third class.
As calculated, Iqbal said the premium hike was expected to meet the needs in 2020, which include the payment of debts from previous years.
However, he stopped short of detailing whether the increase would cause a surplus or not for the state agency. Most importantly, he said, the hospital’s needs would be covered.
"What is certain is that hospitals can maintain their cash flow and focus on providing services, instead of thinking about seeking funds from other sources," said Iqbal.
The agency’s deputy assistant for the service management Dwi Asmariyanti recorded a total of 792,854 participants had lowered their class category throughout December 9, 2019, to January 7, 2020.
"People drop their class category due to Presidential Regulation No. 75 of 2019," Dwi said. The regulation stipulated the premium hike of BPJS Kesehatan insurance for PBPU members.
