UI Responds to the Imprisonment of Reynhard Sinaga

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia (UI) Chief of Public Relations and Public Information Openness, Rifelly Dewi Astuti, has spoken up in regards to the case of Reynhard Sinaga, the sex predator convicted by the Manchester Police.
Rifelly has stated that The University of Indonesia honors the court’s sentence and condemnds the crimes of the perpetrator, deeming it to be inhumane as well as in violation of the law and humanity. “As well, I am concerned and would like to send my commiserations to the victims,” said Reffy in an official statement received by Tempo on Tuesday, the 7th of January 2020.
Although Rifelly acknowledged Reynhard’s status as an alumnus of The University of Indonesia, she renounced any claims that his actions have any correlation with the fact that he was previously a student of the university.
“The University of Indonesia as an educational institution is fully committed to carry on with its principal teaching duties of educating a highly intellectual and moral future generation, as the nation’s next leaders,” Rifelly said.
As reported previously, Reynhard Sinaga was given a lifetime sentence by The Manchester Court, as he has been proven guilty of 159 rape cases and the sexual assault of 48 males within the period of two and a half years, from the 1st of January 2015 until the 1st of January 2017.
Reynhard Sinaga is a civil engineering undergraduate from The University of Indonesia. Based on Tempo’s investigation, Reynhard, whose full name is Reynhard Tambos Maruli Tua Sinaga, is from the class of 2002 and has graduated from the university in July 2006. His thesis was titled ‘Power Architecture’.
When a confirmation was attempted, Rector of the University of Indonesia, Ari Kuncoro, opted to not comment. “I’m not in charge of administration,” said Ari briefly through a short message, on Tuesday, the 7th of January 2020. Reynhard had elected to continue his master’s education in Manchester, in the year 2007.
