Cigarette Tax Hike Takes Effect Since January 1

TEMPO.CO, Tanjung Selor - The government has increased the cigarette tax by 23 percent since January 1. The current cigarette price of the Marlboro brand in Tanjung Selor, Bulungan, North Kalimantan reportedly at Rp30,000 per pack.

Based on the observation at several kiosks and markets in Tanjung Selor, filtered cigarettes, including Marlboro, experienced the highest hike at around Rp3,000 per pack since last month. “There is no price increase today, but it increases since the last month gradually,” said a seller in a market in Tanjung Selor, Thursday, January 2.

The seller who refused to be named claimed he did not know when the hike would stable as that depends on the distributor. The same statement conveyed by other sellers when met at their kiosks on Jalan Padat Karya and Jalan Pangeran Tanjung Palas.

Meanwhile, the price for clove cigarette or traditional kretek and mild rose at around Rp1,000 to Rp2,000 per pack.

Previously, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced the government officially increased the cigarette tax by 23 percent starting January 1. The hike was noted in Ministerial Regulation No. 152/PMK.010/2019 on tobacco tariff dated on October 18.
