TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In his visit to Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) today, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the central government and local administrations of Jakarta’s satellite cities must work in unison in mitigating problems related to flooding.
According to the president, ecological destruction added with people’s general disregard toward nature is what caused Wednesday’s New Year’s Day mass flooding.
“Some are caused by a damaged ecosystem, which leads to ecological destruction, but there are also other causes such as what is often seen; careless trash handling. There are many causes,” said the president in Central Jakarta on January 2.
Up till Thursday, flood can still be seen at a number of areas.
Despite calling for better cooperation between central and regional governments, President Jokowi also said the main priority is to evacuate and accommodate flood victims.
“We will talk about infrastructures to overcome flooding, but that will be discussed after we have completed the evacuation process,” said the President.
