TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) religious figure, Mustofa Bisri, who’s known as Gus Mus, voiced against groups that called for bans on this year's Christmas celebrations and asserts that religious groups must pay equal respect to each other.
He maintains that Christmas is similar to Islam’s Prophet Muhammad’s birthday commemoration; Maulid Nabi.
“Jesus', the Prophet Isa (As), birthday commemoration is Christmas. The Prophet Muhammad is commemorated by what we know as Maulid Nabi. Christmas is the same as Maulid, so please don’t make a fuss about it anymore,” said Gus Mus in giving a public sermon in South Jakarta on Saturday night, December 28.
He also warned that a person shall not consider themselves as religious people if hatred against each other is still upheld.
Gus Mus also called for religious groups to avert from looking down on each other as he deems religion is a means to “humanize humans.”
“Don’t go around and accuse others of blasphemy. If we don’t like other people, it does not mean Allah agrees with you. Don’t equate yourself as a God,” said Gus Mus.
