TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commissioner of the Ombudsman RI, Adrianus Meliala, strongly urged the Indonesian government to precede the Jiwasraya insurance policy case by prioritizing customers who rely on their life savings in the state-owned insurance firm.
“Members of the public with insurance due, please make the payment, [don’t delay it any further]. Just pay it off because the other people insured are not wealthy people,” said Adrianus at the Ombudsman RI headquarters on Sunday, December 29.
According to Adrianus, many senior citizens are relying on their old-days from the state-owned insurance firm. He voiced the fears shared by the less-fortunate groups who possibly face the potential of not getting their money back.
“Imagine dozens of thousands of customers who face the possibility of not getting their money back. I am certain these people are not wealthy ones or those who have multiple life insurances, but members of the public who are solely relying on the insurance for their retirement provisions,” said the Ombudsman commissioner.
Despite the government preparing a bailout plan in establishing insurance holdings for Jiwasraya, Adrianus called for the government to prioritize the insurance firm’s customers who directly face direct losses.
The Supreme Court previously predicts that the state could potentially face losses up to Rp13.7 trillion due to Jiwasraya’s recklessness by investing in mostly bad performing firms.
