TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Convicted murderer in the 2012 assassination case of PT Sanex Steel businessman Tan Harry Tantono, John Kei, has officially been granted early release on probation after having served jail time since 2014.
“The convict, John Refra alias John Kei, has been freed on parole on December 26, 2019,” said the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s correctional directorate-general spokesman Ade Kusmanto on Thursday.
Ade announced the verdict was based on the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s Decree No. Pas-1502.PK.01.04.06/2019 on December 23.
On December 27, 2012, John Kei was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment by the Central Jakarta District Court after he was found guilty in the premeditated murder case of Tan Harry Tantono. The PT Sanex Steel boss was found dead at the Swiss-Belhotel in Central Jakarta on January 26, 2012, in room 2701.
While serving his sentence, John Kei once filed for an appeal in the hopes of a reduced sentence but the Supreme Court added his prison time instead to 16 years' imprisonment. He was initially to be freed in March of 2025 but was released early after fulfilling the requirements for probation until March of 2026.
