Ratna Sarumpaet Released on Parole

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Activist Ratna Sarumpaet, who was convicted guilty of fabricating a hoax story about an attack on herself, was released from prison today. Ratna was released on parole from the Pondok Bambu Women's Prison, South Jakarta.
She was declared to have served the sentence given by the South Jakarta District Court.
"This exemption was given after Ratna's request for parole was accepted and granted," Ratna's lawyer Desmihardi said in a written statement, Thursday, December 26.
Desmihardi added that his client was also given two remissions to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr and the 17th of August from Law and Human Rights Minister Wiranto, which was why of the 2-year sentence, Ratna only served 15 months from October 2018.
The South Jakarta District Court sentenced Ratna to two years of incarceration for spreading a false, fabricated story. Ratna's legal team had appealed to the South Jakarta District Court on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, but later retracted it and accepted the verdict instead.
