TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nearing year end’s Christmas and New Years' holiday season, the Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi revealed that tour bus operators often miss annual safety inspections or ramp checks. His warning came as a reminder for people planning to spend the holidays with the services of such buses.
“The critical thing is in the tourism transportation sector. Where they usually miss ramp checks,” said Budi Karya Sumadi at his office on Thursday.
Ramp checks are mandatory and overseen under the transportation ministry’s decree No.154/2016.
He felt the need to announce this warning as tourism bus fleets are often known to operate as additional or backup fleets during holiday seasons.
“I ask passengers to check the bus’ ramp check compliance,” said Budi Karya, who refers to the sticker placed at the windscreen area of a bus that contains technical information regarding ramp checks which mainly signals whether a bus has passed safety inspections or not.
The Ministry’s research involving 2,300 respondents shows the 2019 Christmas and New Year holiday season will see 69 percent of Indonesians traveling via land transportation in Java Island and travel across the Trans Java Toll.
