TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AirNav Indonesia in Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai Airport announced that it constantly monitors for possible bad weather and natural disasters that might potentially hamper the air traffic in the vicinity of the airport during this year’s Christmas holiday season.
Denpasar’s Airnav Indonesia General-Manager, Kristanto, explains that this has been coordinated across AirNav branches in Surabaya, Makassar, Lombok, and Jakarta.
“For instance the volcanic eruption that happened two years ago where we already prepared alternative for the air dome control tower. If something happens any plane can land at Makassar, Jakarta, or anywhere in its vicinity,” said Kristanto in Bali on Wednesday.
He also said airport management has improved Ngurah Rai’s runway drainage system to anticipate heavy rains amid heavy aircraft traffic.
“As of personnel preparedness, we have tasked competent human resources in their respective fields. There are 230 employees at Denpasar. Among those comprises 80 ATC personnel and 35 technicians,” said Kristanto.
He predicts the Christmas and New Year’s holidays will see commercial flight traffic increase 10 - 15 percent from a normal average of 450-480 activities a day. This makes Ngurah Rai the second busiest airport after Soekarno-Hatta.
