Sri Mulyani Reveals 7 Firms Linked to Luxury Cars Smuggling

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced seven companies involved in the smuggling of luxury cars and motorcycles via Tanjung Priok Port throughout 2016-2019. They are PT SLK, PT TJI, PT NILD, PT MPMP, PT IRS, PT TNA, and PT TSP.
“Luxury cars and motorcycles are smuggled in containers to Indonesia. This is the report from Customs and Excise Directorate General in Tanjung Priok only,” said minister Sri at the port, Jakarta, Tuesday, December 17.
For the past four years, Tanjung Priok customs agency thwarted smuggling attempts of 19 cars and 35 motorcycles, as well as the spare parts from numerous high-end brands, which valued some Rp21 billion, while the state potentially incurred losses up to Rp48 billion.
The latest smuggling attempt was discovered on September 29, 2019. PT SLK smuggled Porsche GT3RS and Alfa Romeo from Singapore with a total value of Rp2.9 billion. The potential state loss reached Rp6.8 billion. As of date, the customs agency was still investigating the imported goods.
Customs and Excise Directorate General recorded a significant increase in the findings of smuggling attempts throughout the country. In 2018, there were 5 cases of luxury car smuggling and 8 cases of motorcycle smuggling, while this year, the number jumped to 57 cases and 10 cases, respectively.
