TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Fast Action Response (ACT) deployed its team to assist victims of a flash flood that hit Sigi District of Central Sulawesi Province, ravaging dozens of houses in the region.

"A team of the Indonesian Volunteers Society (MRI)-ACT arrived at the location to help residents clear up the debris and conducted assessment before providing assistance," Afandi from ACT noted in a statement here on Saturday.

The flash flood hit Hamlet III Pangana, Bolapapu Village, Kulawi Sub-district, Sigi District, on Thursday (Dec. 12) at 6:30 p.m. local time.

The flood also claimed two lives -- a father and a son -- aged 50 and 10 respectively. They were asleep when the flood struck and had no time to save themselves until the flood swept away their bodies.

No further report was received on the number of victims and houses damaged by the flood.

"Some of their houses were damaged while some were submerged in mud, so they are not habitable," Afandi stated.

He noted that the floodwaters had begun to recede at around 10 p.m. that night. The residents worked hand in hand to salvage their valuables and to help evacuate those trapped in the flood.

Affected residents were evacuated to several locations.

"We plan to provide assistance to the victims in the form of prepared meals," Afandi remarked.

He also added that the flood victims were in dire need of assistance in the form of blankets, mosquito repellents, food and beverages, and sleeping mats, among others.
