  • TEMPO.CO, Batam - More than 10 ten houses were damaged in a landslide because of heavy rain since Monday morning in Belimbing Village of Batam city in Riau Islands Province, but there were no casualties.

At least four of the 10 houses suffered severe damage. As a result, the families whose houses were crippled by the landslide took refuge elsewhere. They were temporarily accommodated by their relatives.

Deputy Mayor of Batam City Amsakar Achmad visited the disaster area Tuesday during which he conveyed the city administration's plan to strengthen the village's cliff to prevent it from future mud and landslides.

Achmad urged the villagers whose houses were located in the disaster area to be ready for relocation for the time being so that backhoes could be sent there to help workers start working.

"At the moment, severe rainfall is a possibility. It can potentially trigger another landslide and we cannot let that recur," he said.

Batam is the closest Indonesian city from Singapore, and it has become one of the favorite destinations for the city state's citizens.
