TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said he was observing the performance of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) under the new leader before deciding to issue a regulation in lieu of law or Perpu on KPK.
“Until now, we are still observing [the body’s work], mulling [over a new bill], but the law has not taken into effect yet. After it is complete, the supervisory board is established, and the new leader is in office, we will evaluate it [the KPK Law],” said the President during the International Anti-corruption Day event at SMKN 57 Jakarta, Monday, Dec. 9.
He explained that the government must evaluate all programs on tackling corruption that had been running since the reform era 20 years ago. For example, developing a system to minimize graft practices, which he deemed necessary besides carrying out an operations. “In a bid to build fences to prevent such misdeeds,” the president added.
In addition, the government eyed to have a system allowing cheap political costs.
According to him, programs on eradicating corruption must also be focused on the target. He opined there should be certain targeted areas to be improved first. “Either on the side of regional executives, central government, police, or prosecutors’ office. If it is not sporadic, an evaluation is needed.”
“We must start to make such evaluations so that each action executed can generate concrete and measurable results,” the President remarked.
Jokowi went on to say that besides sting operations, a system improvement in governmental or regional institutions is fundamental, and he will discuss the matter with the new KPK leader.
