TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo asserts that dogs are not for human consumption and asked the Solo City administration to produce a regional law that will put an end to dog meat consumption.
“We must urge the Solo City government to create a firm law and the Solo Legislative Council (DPRD) should create a regulation banning people from consuming dog meat or even selling it,” said Ganjar Pranowo as he met with animal protection group, Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) on Tuesday, December 3.
Ganjar reminded that the ban on eating dog meat is actually overseen in Law No.18/2012 on food, where the Law’s first article states that dogs are not for consumption as the animal is not a biological resource from animal husbandry, forestry, or other similar origins of food.
Moreover, Dog Meat Free Indonesia claims 13,700 dogs have been killed for their meat in the area of Solo Raya. Dozens of thousands of dog meat are sourced from West Java, which is a region that is officially still not free of rabies.
Solo tops the ranking of regions that consume dog meat followed by regions in its vicinity; Salatiga, Sukoharjo, Sragen, and Semarang. DMFI coordinator Karin Franken said Central Java - which has been rabies-free since 1995 - is threatened by the high level of dog meat consumption.
