TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab greeted thousands who attended the 'Reuni 212' (212 Reunion) event at the National Monument, Monday, December 2, 2019. A video of Rizieq speaking to the crowd was shown near the main stage on the north side of Monas.
In the video, Rizieq apologized for not being able to attend the event. Rizieq said he was "stuck" in Mecca as he is banned to leave the country by the Saudi Arabian government at the request of the Indonesian government.
However, the Indonesian government through Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md. had denied Rizieq's accusations. But Rizieq insisted that that is the case; accusing the government of lying.
"I am still grounded by the Saudi Arabian government for security reasons at the request of the Indonesian government," Rizieq said in the video.
Rizieq based his argument on the remarks of two Saudi Arabian Ambassadors, Essam bin Abed Al-Thaqafi, who said that negotiations between high officials of the two countries to repatriate him were taking place.
"That statement from the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia was enough to be seen as an acknowledgement that something [done] by the Indonesian government is keeping me [here in Saudi]," Rizieq Shihab said.
