TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Laode M. Syarif, openly complains that the House of Representatives (DPR) has seemingly shown a lack of respect for the corruption watchdog.
He argues that it is driven by the number of recommendations produced by the anti-graft agency that are not adhered to by members of the House.
“I will be frank, [we] sometimes feel that we are not respected by members of the House. They say KPK has never done any preventive steps. We do a lot. We will hand over the files,” said Syarif in a meeting with the Commission III DPR at the parliamentary complex in Senayan today, Nov. 27.
His statement is a response to the allegations saying that the anti-graft body is more committed to conducting sting operations (OTT) rather than practicing preventive measures upon handling corruption cases. Syarif defends that his institution has recommended a plethora of preventive measures but only to see them end up ignored.
For example, he says, when the corruption watchdog notifying the DPR about the existence of more than 10,000 mining permits in Indonesia where 60 percent of them are illegal.
“Were any of them punished? Not one. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry never investigated them,” said Syarif.
