Teacher's Day; Mayor Risma Inaugurates Museum of Education

TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini has inaugurated the Museum of Education which is located on Jalan Genteng Kali in Surabaya, Monday, November 25 in coincided with the National Teacher’s Day. The museum occupies the historical building of Taman Siswa (Students’ Park).

“This is a historical building because it used to be Taman Siswa. So we renovate it as an educational museum, and we have various collections of past education,” said Risma before journalists.

Risma mentions that a total of 860 collections are displayed in the museum, starting from the past to present education. Surabaya administration through its Culture and Tourism Agency, she added, even hunted them from many places.

“[The collection] is not completed yet. But we are trying to complete it,” said the mayor.

Risma pins hope the museum can serve as a source of education for students regarding the history of past education. “If they know the struggle [for education] in the past, they will surely fight to achieve their goals earnestly without complaints."

The city’s Education and Tourism Agency head, Antiek Sugiharti, says the renovation of the building took about 4 to 5 months. Her side needed to discuss with the cultural heritage team so that it will not damage the essence of the initial building.

Antiek explains that the Education Museum, which is linked to Taman Ekspresi (Expression Park), is open daily for the public from 08:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m. The museum entry is free.
