TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Edhy Prabowo stated it is possible that the six illegal fishing boats confiscated under Susi Pudjiastuti’s leadership will be destroyed under the Attorney General Office’s newly applied regulation.
Edhy explained that during Susi’s tenure, there were 27 boats seized, six have currently become inoperable due to deterioration. These six illegal fishing boats will likely be subjected to the demolition often seen under Susi Pudjiastuti’s tenure.
“There are actually 72 boats that the court [seized],” said Edhy in a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission IV on Wednesday.
The extermination of illegal fishing boats is overseen by Law No.32/2014 and Law No.31/2004 that refers to the United Nations Convention on the law of the sea (UNCLOS) that was ratified under Law No.17/1985.
Meanwhile, Edhy hinted on the rest of the boats - in operable conditions - to eventually be granted for local fishermen after they are officially recorded by the attorney general’s office. Edhy claims he continues to communicate with Finance Minister Sri Mulyani upon the fate of the confiscated illegal fishing boats.
