TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Nadiem Makarim voiced commitment to “liberate” the country’s education unit that is hoped to spark new innovations.
“As our president ordered, together with our mission in the Education Ministry, we intend to liberate the education sector, teachers, and its students,” said Nadiem in his acceptance speech at the 107th anniversary of Muhammadiyah in the Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta University (UMY) on Monday.
Innovations across Indonesia’s education sector will be impossible to achieve without liberation.
“That is my commitment,” said Nadiem.
The GoJek founder also said that he intends to elevate character education as he believes it cannot only be taught but must also be made an example of.
In the Muhammadiyah event, Minister Nadiem Makarim praised the Islamic organization - one of the largest in Indonesia - in assisting the improvements of Indonesia’s education sector.
“I thank Muhammadiyah for taking that role far before Indonesia gained its independence,” said Nadiem.
